Material Handling Equipment - PhD

About the course

Concerning PhD program in the field of “Material Handling Equipment”:

The main objectives of PhD students in “Material Handling Equipment” in department of LEMHCM are based on the following general features:

  • preparation of PhD students to become specialists with high level of qualification and potential ability to apply their knowledge in future industry;
  • preparation of PhD students to work in scientific society e.g. technical universities and other scientific institutions.
  • preparation of PhD students for work on R&D projects.

For achieving that level of preparation the following tasks must be accomplished:

  • PhD studies are led by professors having academic rank;
  • improved laboratory workbenches for teaching and research purposes – accomplished in laboratory classrooms and specialized laboratory facilities, equipped with modern scientific research equipment;
  • application of contemporary information technologies for generation and analyses of large data collection (“big data”).

General directions of progress in PhD studies are as follows:

  • simulation modeling, research and optimization of material handling equipment, structures, logistics and transportation;
  • use of automated systems for data analyses and decision making;
  • robotic equipment, robotic arms and robotic systems;
  • smart systems for diagnose and application of “perpetual” reliability of material handling;
  • logistics processes and methods for their design and optimization;
  • invention of logistic systems, smart system and methods for their control;
  • economic and financial evaluation, logistics management and legal requirements used for handling applications and design.

PhD research for “Material Handling Equipment” program is according to contemporary scientific achievements in the field of Material handling technology, Logistics engineering, Automated systems for data analyses and decision making, simulation modeling of machine processes, robotics, smart systems for diagnosing, running reliability of industrial systems etc. All these fields of applications are executed in theoretical and practical aspect, appropriate for governmental and European priorities of the industry and more focused on Industry 4.0 Systems.

Prerequisites for the successful PhD program in “Material Handling Equipment” are the successfully graduated students in master’s degree in “Mechanical Engineering” or “Logistics Engineering” in faculty of mechanical engineering (FME) at TU-Sofia.
